We celebrate 50 years on air on 24th May 2020. Originally Radio Enfield broadcast a programme of record requests 2 hours a week on Sunday evenings from the Centre Switchroom at Chase Farm Hospital to approximately 400 patients in that hospital via a wired headphone system. The picture shows Nigel Hunt (seated) and Chris Tucker at a Saturday morning rehearsal. The studio shared a space with the street lighting controls so there would be a “clunk” in the background every now and again as the street lights were automatically turned on. It was also below the hospital’s hot water tanks so would get very hot, especially in summer. There were no TVs in the wards then, only a choice of 2 radio channels for patients -BBC Radios 2 and 4: we replaced BBC Radio 2 on their headphones at 8pm every Sunday.
